LOHS Cross Country At Avril Invitational

Coming off of their first OAA Red Division Jamboree four days earlier, the LOHS varsity cross country teams were looking to show just how fast they can be under ideal racing conditions at the Avril Invitational at Kensington Metro Park.
Under cloudy dry skies, the 24 team field made for a competitive environment. The teams where thrilled to be racing on a dry, but challenging course.
The large school women’s race shot off the line promptly at 9:00am. Lake Orion Junior Sophie Novak set the pace early pulling away from the field at the one mile marker. Kalamazoo Loy Norrix’s Ella Schnell was tailing just 10 seconds behind Novak.
Novak would extend her lead at the two mile mark and win the 5k race comfortably in 19minutes 35 seconds. Schnell was second in 19minutes 51seconds, Brighton’s Katie Carothers was third at 20minutes 29seconds.
The Troy Colts showed their depth as they would place six runners in the top 25. Led by Senior Page Anderson’s 4th overall finish, and by Sophomore Aileen Liu’s 7th place overall finish.
Notable finishers for the Lady Dragons were Abby Locke (37th), Iris Meech (60th), and Marissa O’Leary (68th).
Troy would win the team title with 61 points, Brighton was second at 73 points, Canton 3rd, Bloomfield Hills 4th, Seaholm 5th. Lake Orion was 7th overall.
The Dragon men’s varsity 10 raced off the line in a field of 15 teams, looking to measure themselves against some tough competition. Led by senior Andrew Nolan, the Dragons would pull out a solid 5th place overall team finish. Just two points be host Milford.
A pack of four, including Nolan, pulled away from the field at the one mile mark. They wouldn’t look back. Brighton’s Jack Spamer (1st), Zack Stewart (3rd), and Scott Spaanstra (4th) would blister the field earning Brighton the team victory with 34 points overall. Brighton would place five racers in the top 20 to pace the field. Nolan was 3rd overall.
Notable finishers for the Dragons were Will Houver (23rd), Hong Bing Tang (24th), and Clayton Kuiper (45th).
Detroit CC would finish 2nd with Adams 3rd overall in the team scoring. The Dragons next meet will be at the Holly Invitational on Saturday September 14th.
